This is an talk by Tsai Chih Chung (蔡志忠), a famous Taiwan cartoonist at a Chinese Talkshow 开讲啦 .
- 努力并不一定有成就。Hard work does not lead to success. Our parents kept telling children to work hard then they would be successful. This is a white lie. As everybody would work hard initially, but why don't they continue to work hard? Cos not results.
- 掌握知识的"必胜决“是讲出它的关键。To truly master knowledge, is to able to list out the essential points. Every skill has their own difficulties, our teachers did not guide us to our careers, they only taught us what they know. True learning is actually not older teaching younger, is to get to the essential of the subject. Just like a subject, if he fails to teach within 15 minutes, it is his fault.
- His family upbringing is very unique. All decisions Chih Chung made by himself. His family does not question his decisions and his parents let him do what he wants. They called this 放养模式 (I translated it to unrestrained upbringing). [I suspect his parents understands his nature is good so he don't make bad decisions.]
- He mentioned "感谢父母爱我的梦想". He is grateful of his parents for accepting and love for his dream. He aspired to be a cartoonist at the age of 4 and never looked back.
- The interview with parents and kids in the video shows that parents usually don't know what their kids' aspiration. They need to listen to their kids more, not what parents think is good for them and losing their precious childhood.
- 也许我们应该记住自己的梦想. Maybe we should remember what is our dream. As people gets older, they seems to lost their ability to dream due to being hit by the cruel reality. [My dream is a idler. Initially was an engineer but I wanted to retire early. I don't like working and prefer simple life.]
- Parents may not know what to give or guidance to their kids for their dreams. So can only teach the kids that their family will always support them. Climb back up themselves if they fall. Let parents be the first to know if they have a problem as they are 2 people in world most willingly to help you.
- His daughter scored 100 for English, 100 for Arts and 38 for Maths. She cried. He asked why she is crying, as he does not care. She cried harder. She even scored 0 for Maths. He said she was magnificent, as it is not easy to get 0 marks. It is like walking one kilometer in a mine field without stepping on one. She asked him not to laugh at her. He replied he is not. She is his idol. He treated her to eat steak. [I felt that he meant to let his daughter excel in what she is good at and ignore the rest she is weak at. Ultimately, what you learnt in school has little value to what you use in your career or life. Why force them to suffer for what they are weak at? Maybe should go for tuition for their strong subjects to challenge them to be better. They may find what they want to do with their life.]
- In his conversation with his daughter on her dream, she wants to be a designer. When asked what are your thoughts, she replied "why must hamburger be round? Why must sandwiches be triangle?" Like her dad, she has her own thinking at a very young age.[I can relate to this.]
- 父母要帮助孩子完成自己的梦想. Parents need to help kids achieve their dreams. Someone asked if he knows what will his daughter become? He replied don't know but knows she'll be happy being herself. []
- At the age of 36, he has 22 million dollars in his bank and owns 3 houses. Then he decided not to spend a single second making money and use the rest of his life doing something meaningful. [If I know him earlier and other people, I might retire even earlier before age 43. Now I know why some millionaires start to do meaningful things after they are rich at young age. Great minds think alike.]
- He said life is not meant for fame and money as these are useless upon death. Success is doing something that benefit others and let our names be labelled to it. Never underestimate your life and achieve what you wanted (不要低估了自己的一生，人生是自我实现, 完成自己的梦想。)
- 做自己真好 每一分钟都是享受。Being yourself and enjoy every moment of it! [I still looking for what I liked to do most. Hmm...]
Q: There are a lot of choices in life, especially hitting stumbling blocks or major change sometimes, how would you choose?
A: Nothing can be compared to freedom to be yourself. It is not lack of opportunities or luck. Is perseverance. He works 16 hours a day but don't feel like working. He sits for 58 hours or stays in a room for 42 days just to complete a task. Human don't have much basic needs —A place to sleep, food to eat and do what you want. When you put in all your effort to do a task, it is impossible to fail. When your heart is fully contented, it maximize the enjoyment of what you do, nothing else matters. Be a phoenix, dare to jump into flames and rise from the ashes.
Q: 创作路上，不跟风就饿死，怎么办？On the road to creativity, if don't follow the trend, how to survive?

Chih Chung just send drafts of Hundred Schools of Thought (诸子百家) to a publisher and got approved instantly. As large audience interested to understand ancient Chinese philosophy from Lao Zi and Zhuang Zi. Contents is most important for a cartoonist. He spent 99.9% effort understanding the materials and 0.01% to draw. When you do your due diligence on your work to such an extend, no editors would question your contents.

Q: 国学漫画的未来会怎样发展？How will the Studies of ancient Chinese civilization comic progress?
A: He does not want to use of 128 pages of Zhuang Zi comic to represent Zhuang Zi texts and does not want to draw everything from it. His responsibility is telling readers ancient Chinese philosophy is fun, stories are interesting and matters to your whole life. People think philosophy has nothing to do with them but it talks about your whole life, the meaning to life and what to do with your life.
Q: 你真的不在乎外表吗？Do you not bothered about how you present yourself?
A: 我有最自信的一处 其他自然不重要。When he only does only one thing and ignored the rest. When you are doing what you like, you don't even bother to eat. So why bother about appearance? « In a book, Ah Huan Ti was invited to a banquet but got stopped by the guard for dressing inappropriately. He went home to change and got into the banquet. There, he treats food to his clothes. Someone asked him why he does that. He replied, "The host invited my clothes,not me."»
Q: 平凡的我，身边的人再重要又如何？How does important people around me matters to a humble me?
A: He spoke about what matters is the thing you associated with, not only people. Like himself, he associateshimself to drawing but does not speak as well as the host of the show. Everyone must find their forte and excel in what you do. (找到自己的优势 寻找自己的天堂。) Everyone's forte is different.
Method to determine what is your forte:
Take 2 A4 paper. On the right, write down what you are good and bad at. On the left, write down what you like and dislike. Choose to do what you are good at and like and you should succeed.
Working hard to achieve success is a white lie. True hard work do not lead to success. The way is finding your forte and like doing it is the way to success.
Don't blame parent for being what you are. Age 3 can determine your greatness and age 7 can determine how you age, especially the first 5 years of children. (三岁看大 七岁看老). It is not what you are born with, but your own actions and determinations makes you successful. «Life is fair in its own way.»
