The above meaning is my opinion on mindset.
Now you have a rough idea what is a mindset, why must you change it to have a simple life? With a correct mindset, you will be able to plan and make the correct decisions in your life to lead to a simple life that you desire. Most people's lives are too hectic. Always stressed, not enough time, too many desires but unable to achieve inner peace. By changing your mindset, it is like telling yourself you can change for the better, have lesser stress, earn less money, get rid of clutter in your home, enjoy more free time and newfound freedom. It is like a light at the end of the tunnel. What kind of mindset should you adopt? Anything that suits you of course. You also need to be flexible on attributes or beliefs when circumstances arise. You must accept that change is constant in this world. Do not cast anything to stone so you can tweak it along to way.
My simple life mindset is:
1. Survive with minimal resources
2. Declutter my life
3. Freedom to do what I like
4. Achieve inner peace
Survive With Minimal Resources
People take up too many resources from Mother Earth and waste too much as well. Resources like food and time. We produced so much food but we still throw so much away. We spend time making money but only makes our hearts desire for more. With this mindset, I am a downshifter, partial freegan and adopted the minimalism mindset. Downshifting slows down my pace and desires for more. Freegan provided me free resources so I do not need to worry most of three basic needs(food, shelter, clothing). Minimalism mindset allows me to detach myself from stuff so I can let most of the stuff go without strings attached to my heart. All and all, the less I need to survive, the less I need to be concern about what I don't need. Less time to worry and more time to do my things. Freedom to choose what I like too and saves money as well. What more I can I ask for.
Declutter My Life
Essentially, is to remove anything that I don't need, including non-physical stuff like relationship and desires. Except for my collections (Still not compelled to get rid of them yet), I have been decluttering stuff whenever I can but since I don't earn money now, I cannot afford to get rid of anything that has no use for now. I know it is an excuse but that is alright for me. It is not easy to be a minimalist if you dumpster dive. I also declutter relationships, bad or poison relationships with friends and relatives. It is better off without them in the first place. Other things like the desire to buy new gadgets, upgrade new technology and buy new things no longer attracts me so I have more time to do stuff that I have more interest in, like blogging for this blog.
Freedom To Do What I Like
Note the "Like" not "Want". I believe that doing what I like, I can sustain it for the long term and not feel like working at all. Enjoy every moment of it. Sounds good right? Other than blogging, I still looking for something that can let me earn some money. But it is ok, as I feel that I should let nature takes it course. I will find it sooner or later.
Achieve inner peace

Achieve inner peace
I suspect this is the most desired thing for most city dwellers. I have the problem of thinking too much, worry for things that might happen and cannot calm down my mind. I like the term "monkey mind". The two things that helped me achieve this is "declutter my life"(earlier point) and meditation. So far I can't think of any better way than meditation. I have been meditating for a few years but progress is slow. This is not a race so I am taking it easy. No rush. Enjoy the meditation process. My mind did calm down and think less nowadays.
My opinion for a simple life is simply no stress and having three most basic needs. I will only focus on these as Maslow's hierarchy of basic needs, I only feel security is the most logical one to add to my list. Others are not needs or good to have in some cases. Having too many needs also has its set problems. So keeping it minimal is less headache for yourself to have a simple life.
Changing your mindset is very hard, almost impossible for some people. DETERMINATION and strong DESIRE(for once desire is good) plays a part here. But it does not mean with it you can change your mindset. It just means it is a step closer to changing mindset if you have it.
Why do I say this? I give you some questions to ponder about:
1. Are you able to quit your job and do what you like for the rest of your life?
2. Can you accept people judging you for what you are?
3. Can your family members accept who you are?
4. Can your spouse be able to accept who you are?
For the above questions, how many of you can say "Yes" to all of them? That is why even with the determination may not allow you to achieve a simple life. A lot of it seems to be social and society related as ultimately if you can ignore what others think, not bothered it, you already achieve a huge success to have a simple life.
What happens if you don't have "Yes" in any of the questions? Well, all is not lost. It just means you cannot make a big change at once. If you can yourself to make small changes in your life if you have enough desire to change:
- Value and love yourself more.
- Find out what you like and interest you most. Then try to do it for the rest of your life.
- Stop spending money, time, effort stocking up useless stuff and non-physical stuff in your life. Learn to let go and get rid of as much stuff as you can. Keep those stuff around you that brings you joy(similar to Marie Kondo's spark joy) and happiness will find you instead of searching for it.
Start by making small changes in your life that you think can help you have a simple life. Do understand simple life is the simpler, the better it is. You will never regret what once you get there. Trust me.
